Media Literacy Project

Below is a summary of the 3 year Media Literacy Project due for completion in June 2015.
 

2015 saw the 3 year ‘Media Literacy Project’ recognised nationally as Lead Teacher Claire Dunsire (Greengates Primary) won Into Film’s ‘Most Inspirational Use of Film’ award.

Claire is one of our many Lead Teachers having succesfully completed her training in Phase one.

She has since supported the project by working with other schools and speaking at regional and national events with regard to the impact of the project in her school.
 
It’s widely acknowledged that film and other media have the capacity to inspire children to become more active, engaged, and expert readers and writers. 
 
The Media Literacy project is a 3 phase (year) project currently managed by Bradford Metropolitan District Council’s Curriculum Innovation service in partnership with Bradford UNESCO City of Film (CoF), the British Film Institute (BFI) and CapeUK. The project follows a successful pilot project with a selection of Bradford schools in 2010 investigating the impact of the effective use of Media Literacy on Literacy attainment in KS2.
The programme aims to create ‘Media Literacy Leaders’ across all school partnerships in the district thereby developing capacity for future school to school support. The impact of this project is to be analysed and assessed in a study by a PhD student at the University of Bradford.
 
The aim of the project is to enable teachers to:
  • Understand how children can ‘read’ films using professional techniques.
  • Discover a range of resources to analyse film to raise standards in writing.
  • Learn to use Media Literacy to teach grammar and punctuation.
  • Gain hands on experience planning, filming, editing and uploading films.
Phase 1 of the project involved 9 schools, 11 classes and 57 targeted pupils. The aim was for the targeted group of children to make 4 APS progress in Literacy in the 9 month project. The group made an average of just over 4 APS in that time period. The 57 children were trained to be ‘Digital Media Literacy Leaders’ and the 9 staff involved became trained Media Literacy Leaders (MLLs).
 
Phase 2 involves a further 20 schools with 8 of the qualified MLLs from Phase 1 co-delivering the programme to the new schools and their classes this year. The target of 4 APS has remained and early data would suggest we are on track for this target. CapeUK have supported the project in Phase 2 by funding professional film makers to engage with the training and work directly with the schools as part of Phase 2.
 
Phase 3 of the project began in September 2014 and is due for completion in June 2015. Recent data from schools suggests that the impact of this phase of the project on reading and writing attainment will be inline with previous years. 
 
Due to the success of this project we have run similar exciting projects in Wales and Calderdale.
