Developing and Evidencing Mathematical Investigations

On January 18, 2018 13:30 until January 18, 2018 15:30

Please note this event is now full.

Do you want to improve your children’s reasoning and explanation skills?

Do you want them to deeply understand mathematical rules and relationshipDo you want to improve the outcomes from the Reasoning papers in the SATs?

This course, aimed at Primary Mathematics Subject Leaders, will:

  • equip you with ideas on how to encourage your pupils to notice and test conjectures;
  • show you how to record the children’s findings using a range of technology; and a small number  of highly effective apps
  • give ideas on how to scaffold and develop skills in your children which ensure that they are confidently able to discuss mathematics using accurate and technical language.

Session 1 will involve you learning how to encourage children to notice rules and relationships, focusing on using concrete resources and pictorial representations. We will look at word banks and sentence stems that can be used to scaffold explanations and discussions. You will also be skilled in the technological aspects that will be required in order to record and present findings.

Session 2 will involve children. You will bring two children from Key Stage 2 who can act as ambassadors back in class for the process and the technology. We will take part in an investigation together and the children will record their findings and conclusions. Then you will be given time, with support if required, to pursue another investigation of your choice with your children, drawing on the information you will have gathered from the first session.

The two sessions will be during afternoons a week apart and will be from 1:30pm until 3:30pm (pleased arrive 10 minutes before the time stated, if possible, to allow for a prompt start at 1:30pm). The two afternoons are: Thursday 11th January, 2018 and Thursday 18th January, 2018. They will be hosted at the Curriculum Innovation Centre

The cost for both sessions will be £150. The sessions will be jointly delivered by Tim Bleazard of the Curriculum Innovation Centre and Sharon Day of SharonDayMaths Ltd.
