The Scenario and Suspects

The Scenario

Mona Lott rang to ask for our assistance. She runs a local coffee shop called Deja Brew next to Bradford University of Art. It is very popular with local students and lecturers and there is a short corridor leading to the toilets where local artists and students can exhibit their paintings for free, a week at the time. This is a great chance for students to show their work and often other customers visiting the coffee shop buy the paintings.
However, over the last week, Mona has replaced one particular picture every day only to find that by lunchtime it has reappeared on the wall in exactly the same place. She has closed circuit (CCTV) cameras in the shop but the main camera showing the seating area and corridor to the toilet has stopped working so she cannot see who is replacing the picture. However, she has some footage from the front door camera and she has used this to check who was in the shop each morning. The following people were all in the shop each day the picture reappeared. One of them must be the culprit! Their details are below.

Aisha Singh

Aisha is a first year Art student at Bradford University of Art who works part time at the coffee shop waiting on tables. She is a very bright girl who got fantastic results in her A levels and is already doing very well in the 1st year of her degree course. Professor Edious has already singled her out for greatness and this has made some of her fellow students a little jealous.  Art Dekko is one of her lecturers and he too is very jealous of her because she is getting more positive attention than he has received in the last 20 years. Aisha is a local girl from Bradford and lives at home with her parents and her younger brother.

Art Dekko

Art is a famous French artist who has worked in Bradford for 5 years as a lecturer in Modern Arts at Bradford University of Arts. He is 45 years old and he is single but he has been married 4 times in the past to a variety of French women but never had any children. He lives for Art and cannot understand why anybody would want to do sport or watch television when you can create art. He loves painting but has also created several large sculptures. His work has never been critically acclaimed and many art critics in France have made unpleasant comments about his work and that was the reason he moved from Paris to Bradford.

Polly Graf

Polly is an art student from Barbardos who is studying Art and Design at Bradford University of Arts. She is 20 years old and arrived in Bradford in 2014 a few months after her 18th Birthday. She is in her 2nd year of a four year course and loves it in Bradford. She is a very intelligent woman and a talented painter, she has already had several of her paintings exhibited in Barbados. She is also a lead vocalist for a local band called Polly and the Parrots with her boyfriend Billy who is on the same course. Part of Polly’s course is taught by Art Dekko but she finds his lectures a little dull.

Mona Lott

Mona is 39 and runs the local coffee shop next to the University called Deja Brew and is a massive fan of Science Fiction. The highlight of her year is travelling to Comic Con Manchester each year dressed as Princess Leia from Star Wars and hanging out with her other friends who are also Science Fiction nerds. She has run the café for 15 years but has a reputation for being quite dour, she dislikes most forms of arts other than Pop art and finds a lot of the students and lecturers quite boring. She is married with 2 twin boys who are 19 and studying at Liverpool University. She is very proud of her homemade cakes but the local students are less keen commenting that she wouldn’t get very far in the Great British Bake Off.

Professor Edward Edious

Professor Edious has been in charge of the Fine Arts Department at Bradford University of Arts for 10 years and is known to his friends as Ted. He is very officious and is not popular with most of the lecturers at the University because he is very strict about them getting course work and exams marked on time. He is 53 years old and lives for art. He is a very successful painter and several of his paintings have been critically acclaimed although they most expensive sold for only £25,000. Many of the other lecturers think that he is too old fashioned and that the University would benefit from a younger and more modern Professor in charge of the Faculty.
